Smelters Actively Produce Primary Aluminum Production in China in November before the Implementation of Winter Production Limitation
Font size:SMB

China National Bureau of Statistics released data on Friday showed that China's primary non-ferrous metal aluminium production rebounded in November, halting the trend of three consecutive months of decline, as smelters actively produced before the implementation of the production restriction policy in mid-winter of that month.

Data show that as the world's largest aluminium producer. China produced 2.82 million tons of raw aluminium in November.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, this is 3.9% higher than the 2.72 million tons produced in October and 19.2% higher than the same period in 2017.

According to the calculation, China's daily production of primary aluminium in November was 94,000 tons, the highest level since July, higher than about 88,000 tons in October. The number of days in November is one day less than that in October.

Despite a 2.8% drop in Shanghai aluminium prices and a two-year low, China's primary aluminium production increased annually in November, making electrolytic aluminium smelters barely profitable in a well-supplied market environment.

Affected by factors such as market environment, environmental protection and production restriction, and in line with the principle of maximizing metal price benefit, China Aluminum decided to implement elastic production for some electrolytic aluminium production lines of Shanxi Huasheng Aluminum Industry Co., Ltd. and Shandong Huayu Alloy Material Co., Ltd., involving about 470,000 tons of electrolytic aluminium production capacity.

According to documents released by the Binzhou government, China Hongqiao Group has been asked to cut its annual smelting capacity by up to 550,000 tons during the winter heating season that begins in mid-November.

According to statistics from the International Bureau of Statistics, China's aluminium production in the first 11 months of this year was 31.45 million tons, an increase of 7.5% over the same period last year, and is expected to set a record annual production level.

Meanwhile, in November, the output of ten non-ferrous metals, including copper, aluminium, lead, zinc and nickel, reached 4.71 million tons, an increase of 4.2% over the previous year and 12.7% over the previous year.

According to the calculation, the daily output of the above ten non-ferrous metals was 157,000 tons last month, the highest since July 2017.

From January to November, the output of the above ten non-ferrous metals increased by 6.1% to 50.43 million tons. In addition to the non-heavy metals mentioned above, the other non-heavy metals are tin, antimony, mercury, magnesium and titanium.
